Orthodontic is important for much more than just aesthetics. Braces and Invisalign are used to straighten teeth for a more attractive, beautiful smile, but orthodontics can also treat serious dental problems like a malpositioned jaw, improper bite, and poor spacing between teeth.
At our family orthodontics practice in Flagstaff, Dr. Jason Dittberner provides orthodontic treatments to patients of all ages. Whether your child needs braces, or you’re an adult who is interested in advanced orthodontics such as Invisalign, we can help.

Traditional braces have been used to straighten teeth for nearly a century. Using a system of rubber bands, brackets, and wires, metal braces shift the teeth gradually by applying pressure to each individual tooth.
Metal braces are usually the most cost-effective method of orthodontic correction. In addition, they can be used to treat a wide variety of orthodontic issues, such as:
- Bite position
- Crowded teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Gaps/improper spacing between teeth
- Malpositioned jaw
Typically, metal braces are recommended for teenagers and children, as they provide the fastest treatment times for orthodontic correction. Children and young adults are still growing, so their teeth shift more easily, leading to an overall shorter treatment time.
Typical treatment times range from 12 months to 3 years, depending on how much orthodontic correction is required.
However, metal braces can be used to treat orthodontic issues in people of all ages. Whether you’re interested in orthodontic correction for you or your child, traditional metal braces may be the right choice for you.
Invisalign is a newer alternative to traditional metal braces. Rather than using wires, brackets, and rubber bands that are attached to the teeth, Invisalign uses sets of clear plastic aligners.
These aligners are made of a clear plastic, and are quite similar to retainers or mouth guards in size and shape. Each Invisalign aligner is built to slowly and gently apply pressure to your teeth, shifting their position over several weeks.
Invisalign aligners are usually worn for 20-22 hours a day, and can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing/flossing, and sporting activities. Typically, you will change your aligners out for a new set every 2 weeks. You will make an appointment with Dr. Dittberner every 6 weeks, so that your progress be measured, and he can ensure that your treatment is proceeding properly.
Treatment usually takes 20+ sets of aligners, so a typical Invisalign treatment will take around a year. Pricing is usually quite comparable to metal braces.
Invisalign is extremely popular for orthodontic correction in adults. Because Invisalign can be worn without others noticing, even during work and other activities, it’s a great way for older individuals to get a more straight, attractive smile without the unfortunate stigma of metal braces.
However, Invisalign may not be right if you have issues that require significant orthodontic correction, such as a malpositioned jaw or significant under/overbite problems.
